Ralph Lauren's story begins in 1964 when the ties Ralph wore were narrower than usual and therefore attracted a lot of attention. It was then that some stores were interested in the novelty and he, who was not a designer but had great ideas, managed to convince his employer to produce some wider ties. It was then that the orders increased and the ties, in Italian silk and handmade, cost twice as much as the others, but they sold non-stop. But later a new administration took over the company's business, Ralph's invention was scrapped. It was then that he transferred to a larger company, Beau Brumell, also in menswear, which decided to create a brand for his ties. Inspired by the sophistication of the horse polo game, Lauren created a collection of striped ties, which he named POLO. From then on, the company grew and in 1969, already under the name POLO RALPH LAUREN, the brand had a store (actually an exhibition space) inside the luxurious department store Bloomingdale's. |
