History

The history of Lacoste begins when in 1923 in the city of Boston, during a trip with the French team to dispute the Davis Cup, tennis player Jean René Lacoste was enchanted by an elegant crocodile leather suitcase in a store window and its captain he jokes “If you win, I'll buy you one” but he lost anyway but journalist George Carens heard the story and mentioned it in his Boston Evening Transcript article: “Young Lacoste didn't get his crocodile-skin briefcase , but he fought like a real crocodile”. The public quickly dubbed him “Le Crocodile” which represented the tenacity and aggressiveness that René displayed on the tennis courts. It was then later that friend and stylist Robert George designed a crocodile for René and he agreed that he even decided to have the crocodile embroidered in the pocket of a white blazer. It was then that in 1933, together with André Gillier, then owner and president of the largest French knitwear company, he founded La Société Chemise Lacoste. |
